Getting Started FAQs

Have questions about how fundraising with Our Beautiful Family works?  We have assembled our most frequently asked questions.

What is required to verify a family is adopting?

When you publish a Family Profile a member of the Our Beautiful Family team will contact you to verify the information is accurate.  This may include documentation or verification from your Adoption Agency that they will accept funds for your adoptions expenses.. If something comes up, we will let you know ASAP.

Do I have to wait for verification from Our Beautiful Family before I can start raising funds?

You do not! You can create your Family Profile and begin sharing your fundraiser with your community immediately. Donations to your Fundraiser can be disbursed for adoption related expenses once your adoption status is verified.

Where are the funds disbursed once my fundraiser is complete?

All funds raised can go directly to your adoption agency, or disbursed to you for qualified adoption related expenses. This helps maintain accountability in the process and ensures that donations given are eligible for a tax deduction.

If I do not reach the fundraising goal, can I still use funds raised for my adoption?

Yes! Funds raised can be used to pay for adoption related expenses.

What happens if we raise more funds than needed for our adoption?

If more funds are raised than are required to pay for adoption related expenses, those funds can be directed to your adoption agency, used for another families adoption related expenses, or to the Our Beautiful Family General Fund to be used to continue to support adoptive families.

What is the cost for using Our Beautiful Family?

Our Beautiful Family deducts 5% of funds raised to cover the cost of payment processing, grant disbursement, and organizational administration. Donors are given the opportunity to cover those processing fees, or you can add that percentage to your overall fundraising goal.

Do you accept checks?

Yes, Our Beautiful Family accepts physical checks.

What expenses are considered to be “qualified adoption related”?

Qualified adoption-related expenses are the necessary expenses incurred by the family for the adoption of an eligible child.

These expenses typically include:

  1. Adoption fees: This includes any fees paid to an adoption agency, attorney, or other individuals facilitating the adoption process.
  2. Court costs: Expenses related to court proceedings, including filing fees and legal representation costs.
  3. Travel expenses: Transportation, meals, and lodging expenses incurred while traveling to meet the child, attend court hearings, or complete other adoption-related activities.
  4. Re-adoption expenses: If the adoption is finalized in a foreign country and re-adoption is required in the taxpayer’s home country, expenses related to the re-adoption process may be considered qualified.
  5. Other expenses: Other necessary expenses directly related to the legal adoption of the child, such as home study fees, immigration expenses (if applicable), and counseling fees.
Can I make a contribution to my own fundraiser?

Yes, however, contributions to your own adoption fundraiser will not appear on your year-end statement as a tax-deductible donation. This is because all adoption-related expenses qualify for the Adoption Tax Credit, so your personal contributions would be double-dipping if they were deductible. If you have questions on taxes, please consult your tax advisor or visit the IRS website for more information.

Are the donations made by my friends and family tax deductible?

All donations are made to Our Beautiful Family (a 501(c)(3) charitable organization). Therefore, your donation may be tax-deductible. If you have questions on taxes, please consult your tax advisor or visit the IRS website for more information.

What about my adoption tax credit?

The Adoption Tax Credit requirements and related documentation are all available on the IRS website. Please consult with your tax advisor for specific advice.
